Brand Story
2015 — Born from Silicon: A Tech Entrepreneur's Bet on EVs
Leapmotor (零跑汽车, literally "zero-run") was founded in December 2015 in Hangzhou, China, by Zhu Jiangming and a team of technology engineers. Zhu, a co-founder of Dahua Technology — one of the world's largest video surveillance companies — believed the future of mobility would be built on software and intelligent systems rather than mechanical engineering alone. He set out to create an EV brand that would develop every core technology entirely in-house: from chips and battery management to autonomous driving software.
- Founded in Hangzhou by Zhu Jiangming, co-founder of surveillance giant Dahua Technology.
- Established a philosophy of 全域自研 ("full-domain in-house R&D") — developing chips, motors, battery systems, and intelligent cockpit software without reliance on third-party suppliers.
- Early team drawn heavily from consumer electronics and software industries rather than traditional automotive backgrounds.
2019 — The S01: A Sporty First Step
Leapmotor's first production model, the S01, was a compact sports coupe EV launched in 2019. While it generated interest as a design statement — offering an affordable sports-car silhouette in the EV space — the S01's sales were constrained by its small cabin and niche positioning. Nevertheless, it served as an important proof of concept, validating Leapmotor's manufacturing credentials and in-house engineering approach.
- S01 coupe EV launched in 2019 — Leapmotor's debut production vehicle.
- Limited commercial success but validated the brand's manufacturing and in-house engineering capabilities.
2020 — T03: The City EV That Broke Barriers
Leapmotor's breakthrough came with the T03, a compact city EV launched in 2020 and priced aggressively for China's mass market. Offering a range of up to 403 km (NEDC) at a starting price under RMB 80,000, the T03 became one of China's fastest-growing city EV models. Its blend of modern connectivity, safety technology, and accessible pricing proved Leapmotor could compete at scale — and it later became one of the first Leapmotor models exported to Europe.
