How to Get YouTube & Google Play on Chinese Models
Stuck with a Chinese-spec BYD and missing your favorite apps? You don't have to settle for a locked system. Here is the secret to getting the full Google Play Store experience in under 5 minutes.
Since you are running a Chinese-spec EV, you’ve likely noticed that the system is built on a version of Android that lacks Google Mobile Services (GMS). Because the car doesn't have the "engine" that runs Google apps, you can't just install a YouTube APK and expect it to work.
This is where GBox comes in. Here is a breakdown of what it is and how to get it running on your EV.
What is GBox?
GBox (Google Box) is a "virtual environment" or "sandbox." Think of it as a separate room inside your car’s tablet. Inside this room, all the Google frameworks (GMS) are already set up and running
When you install YouTube inside GBox, the app "thinks" it is running on a standard Android phone with Google services, allowing you to sign in to your Google Account, sync your history, and watch videos without the app crashing.
Step-by-Step Installation for BYD (Chinese Version)
Since the Play Store isn't pre-installed, you have to "sideload" GBox first.
1. Enable Installation from Unknown Sources
- Open the Settings on your BYD screen.
- Go to Software Details or System Settings.
- Find Security (sometimes under "Privacy") and enable Allow installation of apps from unknown sources.
- Tip: If you can't find it, try tapping the "Build Version" number 7 times to see if "Developer Options" appears.
2. Download and Install GBox
- Open the built-in browser in your BYD.
- Go to the official site: www.gboxlab.com.
- Download the APK file.
- Once downloaded, open your File Manager, find the APK in the "Downloads" folder, and install it.
3. Setting Up Google Play Store
- Open the GBox app you just installed.
- You will see a list of icons like YouTube, Google Maps, and the Google Play Store.
- Tap on the Google Play Store icon inside GBox.
- It will prompt you to Sign In. Use your standard Gmail/Google credentials.
- Once signed in, you now have a fully functional Play Store running within the GBox environment.
4. Installing YouTube
- Inside the GBox Play Store, search for YouTube.
- Hit Install.
- Crucial Step: To make it easy to access, long-press the YouTube icon inside GBox and select "Create Shortcut." This will place a YouTube icon on your car's main home screen so you don't have to open GBox every time.
Important Tips for BYD Owners
- Safety Lock: Most Chinese BYD firmware will block video playback while the car is in D (Drive). You may need a third-party "Video in Motion" APK or a specific settings tweak if you want passengers to watch while moving (though we always recommend keeping eyes on the road!).
- Privacy: Since GBox is a third-party virtualization tool, it’s best practice to use a secondary Google account if you are concerned about your primary account's data security.
