EV Charging Ports in Cambodia (GB/T vs. CCS2)
Thinking of buying an electric vehicle in Cambodia? Before you hit the road, you need to know your plugs! With the local market split between the widespread Chinese GB/T standard and the international CCS2, understanding your car's charging port is the secret to a stress-free drive. Discover everything you need to know about EV compatibility, adapters, and how to navigate the growing public charging network without ever running out of juice.
In Cambodia, the choice of an Electric Vehicle (EV) often comes down to which charging standard it uses: GB/T or CCS2.
1. GB/T: The Standard for Chinese Imports
Since many EVs in Cambodia are parallel imports from China, the GB/T standard is currently the most widespread.
- Main Brands: BYD, MG, Geely, Chery, and Tesla (China models).
- Design: It features two separate ports. One is for slow AC charging (Type 2 style but with GB/T pin layout) and a completely separate, larger port for DC Fast Charging.
- Availability: Most public charging stations in Cambodia are equipped with GB/T cables to serve these popular models.
2. CCS2: The International Standard
The CCS2 (Combined Charging System) is the standard used by European manufacturers and international Tesla versions.
- Main Brands: BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Kia, Porsche, and Tesla (International models).
- Design: It is a "Combined" port. The car has only one charging door. The top part handles slow AC charging, and for fast DC charging, the larger connector uses the entire port at once.
- Status: While it is the global favorite for its high power capacity and clean design, you may need a "GB/T to CCS2" adapter to use many of the local charging stations in Cambodia.
